Antique Khmer Style Stone Shiva Mukhalinga Linga / Lingnum - 9cm/4"
Measures (Height) 9cm/4"
A fine quality antique Khmer‑style sandstone linga (also referred to as lingum or lingam), an abstract and deeply sacred representation of the Hindu deity Shiva.
In Hindu tradition, the linga is one of the oldest and most profound symbols of the divine, rich with spiritual and cosmic significance. It is closely associated with fertility, creative power, and the inexhaustible energy that sustains the universe. As a sign of the divine masculine principle, the linga expresses the union of opposites and the creative forces from which all existence emerges.
Here, the linga appears in its classic cylindrical stone form, evoking Shiva in his formless, transcendent aspect. The term “linga” literally means “sign” or “symbol,” indicating that what is represented is not a human-like figure, but the unmanifest, attribute‑less nature of God that lies beyond ordinary perception and form. In this way, the linga becomes a powerful focus for contemplating the infinite and formless reality of Shiva.
Traditionally, the linga is revered as a symbol of Shiva’s divine energy and limitless potential—the source, sustainer, and dissolver of the cosmos. It serves as a reminder of the continuous cycle of creation, preservation, and transformation that underpins all life.
In this particular piece, a representation of the powerful Shiva can be seen on the base of the mukhalinga (a linga that incorporates a face or image of the deity). This detail enriches the work by uniting the abstract, aniconic symbol with a more personal, recognizable depiction of Shiva, beautifully capturing both his formless essence and his compassionate presence in the world.
