An antique Thai-style Dvaravati Buddha from Thailand, embodying the quiet grace and early refinement of Buddhist sculpture in the region. This elegant figure combines spiritual presence with remarkably naturalistic modelling.
The Buddha stands in samabhanga, a poised and balanced stance, with the monastic garment (sanghati) draped over the left shoulder and clinging delicately to the body. The robe is rendered with softly flowing, wavelike folds that subtly reveal the gentle contours beneath, creating a sense of realism and serene dignity.
His right hand is raised in the vitarka mudra, the gesture of teaching and discourse, symbolising the transmission of the Dharma. The lowered left hand forms the varada mudra, the boon-bestowing gesture, associated with generosity, compassion, and the granting of blessings to devotees.
The face is finely modelled and handsome, with a slight, knowing smile and an aquiline nose that lends the figure refinement and character. Downcast, introspective eyes and a firm, composed brow convey deep inner peace and meditative focus. The elongated earlobes recall his princely youth, when he wore heavy gold earrings before renouncing worldly life.
