Antique Javanese Style Bronze Standing Indonesian Ganesha Statue - 19cm/8"
Measures (Height) 19cm/8"
Antique Javanese‑style bronze standing Ganesha from Indonesia, rendered in samabhanga posture on a tiered pedestal, radiating poised calm and quiet authority.
The beautifully matured, greenish‑brown patina is particularly delightful, softening the contours of the figure and highlighting the age and character of the bronze, while subtle surface irregularities speak to long devotional use and handling.
Ganesha, the elephant‑headed son of Shiva, is shown four‑armed, holding an axe, his broken tusk, a fly whisk and a bowl of laddus (Indian sweetmeats). These attributes are deeply symbolic rather than martial: the axe encourages us to cut away the obstacles and vices that hinder our progress, from practical hurdles to more abstract emotions such as jealousy and anger, clearing space for new beginnings and a renewed approach to life’s worries.
The bowl of sweets, never depicted as being eaten, represents the rewards of a wisely led life and the enduring sweetness of fulfilled experience, while also gently echoing everyday human pleasures and desires.
The broken tusk, held as a kind of spiritual tool, reminds us that inner growth matters more than outward perfection. Its backstories—whether shattered in the drama of Ganesha’s creation or repurposed as a writing instrument—emphasise the idea that our spiritual journey transcends the limitations of the physical body and invites us to overcome the illusion that the two are separate.
The direction of Ganesha’s trunk, turning to his left, is traditionally associated with success in the worldly sphere and is linked to grihasthas, or householders, making this image especially resonant for those seeking prosperity, harmony and stability at home.
In his early Indian forms Ganesha was closely associated with fertility, and over time he became widely revered as the Remover of Obstacles, Lord of Beginnings, patron of arts and sciences, and deity of intellect and wisdom.
One of the most recognisable Asian deities, this finely cast standing Ganesha offers not only richly layered symbolism but also endlessly timeless style, sure to bring insight, good fortune and a quietly protective presence into any interior.
