    Recumbent Sacred Bull of Shiva

    Measures (Length) 10cm/4"

A characterful antique Khmer-style bronze depicting Nandi, the sacred bull and devoted mount of Shiva. Resting upon a low rectangular plinth, the figure combines a compact, rounded body with an upright head and an attentive expression—a quietly expressive image of strength held in repose.

Nandi is shown with prominent horns, gently projecting ears, and a clearly modelled shoulder hump. One foreleg extends forward while the remaining limbs are gathered beneath the body, giving the composition a subtle sense of movement without disturbing its settled posture. The tail curves across the hindquarters, adding definition to the reverse.

A decorative collar of pendant-like ornaments encircles the neck, with warm gold-coloured accents contrasting against the darker surface. Mottled green patination extends across the body and plinth, bringing depth to the contours and highlighting the bull’s face, shoulders, and folded legs.

The sculpture’s modest scale and broad base make it an engaging addition to a shelf, desk, devotional setting, or collection of Southeast Asian sacred art. Its appeal lies in the balance between physical solidity and gentle attentiveness.

    Nandi: Devotion, Strength and Steadfastness

Nandi is Shiva’s vahana, or sacred vehicle, and is also revered as his foremost devotee. In Shaiva temples, an image of the reclining bull commonly faces the inner sanctuary, directing an unwavering gaze toward Shiva. This relationship makes Nandi an enduring expression of loyalty, patient attention, and devotion.

His recumbent posture is therefore more than a naturalistic resting position. The raised head and alert expression suggest readiness and focus: strength is present, but it is disciplined rather than aggressive.

As a humped bull, Nandi also carries associations with fertility, vitality, and abundance. Museum interpretations connect his powerful form with strength and virility, as well as religious and moral duty.

The neck ornaments reinforce his sacred identity. Historic Nandi sculptures are frequently adorned with chains, bells, and other ceremonial decoration, distinguishing Shiva’s honoured companion from an ordinary animal.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Who is Nandi?

Nandi is the sacred bull associated with Shiva. He serves as Shiva’s mount and is also honoured as a devoted attendant whose gaze remains directed toward the deity. His name is associated with joy or rejoicing.

    Why is Nandi shown reclining?

The recumbent bull is a familiar form in Shaiva temple sculpture. Nandi often rests before the sanctuary, facing Shiva in an attitude of continuous devotion. His settled body and raised head communicate patient, attentive presence rather than inactivity.

    What does Nandi symbolise?

Nandi brings together strength, fertility, stability, and religious devotion. His physical power is balanced by loyalty and disciplined attention, making him an image of both vitality and spiritual steadiness.

Why does he wear a decorated collar?

Ceremonial ornaments identify Nandi as an honoured sacred being. Comparable historic sculptures depict him wearing chains, bells, and decorative fittings around the neck and body.

Is this a cow or a bull?

It is identified as Nandi, Shiva’s bull. The horns, prominent shoulder hump, recumbent posture, and ceremonial collar are consistent with the traditional presentation of the deity’s sacred mount.

    What does “Khmer style” mean?

It describes the supplied artistic attribution and the sculpture’s relationship to Cambodian traditions.

How should it be displayed and handled?

Place the sculpture on a stable surface with clearance around the horns. Support the plinth when moving it rather than lifting by the head, horns, collar, or extended foreleg.

Thanks for your kind note. I have always found it to be a pleasure doing business with your company. The products and service offered are superb. As a collector, I already own several Burmese pieces, but nothing even closely comparable to this one. When I saw it I was smitten. Keep up the good work.
