An Indonesian (Javanese) mounted Shiva in the 13th‑century Majapahit style.
Shiva stands on a simple square pedestal, robed with a tied waist sash and adorned with ornate jewellery, including a crown and earrings. At the base of the pedestal stands his son Ganesha, the beloved remover of obstacles, underscoring Shiva’s role as both cosmic deity and compassionate father.
As the destroyer within the Hindu Trimurti—alongside Brahma the creator and Vishnu the preserver—Shiva is regarded as limitless, transcendent, and unchanging, as well as the patron god of yoga, meditation, and the arts. On his forehead appears the trilochana, his third eye, symbol of penetrating wisdom that cuts through maya (illusion) and duality, and source of his fierce, untamed energy.
Here he is depicted with six arms, each bearing a sacred attribute: a fly whisk, axe, trident, mala beads, and a kalasha. The kalasha, the “overflowing full vase” of Vedic tradition, is revered as a symbol of abundance and the source of life, believed to contain amrita, the elixir of immortality, and thus associated with wisdom, prosperity, and eternal life.
His hair is arranged in a tripartite chignon, crowned with a decorative cockade. The adornment is otherwise discreet yet refined: a single necklace, diamond‑shaped earrings, a yajnopavita (sacred Brahmanical thread), and one bangle on each wrist.
