Stripped of overt royal or divine regalia, this image presents Jayavarman VII as a humble, spiritual man absorbed in reverent meditation. His hair is drawn back into a small chignon, and his face displays the classic Khmer physiognomy: semi‑closed introspective eyes, a gentle smile, a broad forehead, balanced lips, and long earlobes. The calm power of his expression suggests supreme knowledge, compassion, and inner peace.
Jayavarman VII, celebrated as one of Angkor’s greatest kings, was responsible for the construction of numerous temples in the Angkor region and beyond, and is credited with liberating and unifying the kingdom. Many of the structures visitors associate with Angkor today were built or transformed under his rule. At the heart of Angkor Thom stands the Bayon temple, famed for its towers bearing serene faces of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara on all four sides—visages widely believed to echo the king’s own, whose gentle expression is often called the “Khmer smile.” A devout Mahayana Buddhist, he is remembered as both ruler and spiritual exemplar.
