An antique Khmer style bronze seated Ganesha in 12th century Angkor Wat style.
The distinctive patina of the piece is particularly delightful.
Ganesha is the elephant headed son of Shiva. He holds his broken tusk in one hand and a bowl of sweetmeats in another hand. He is also holding a chakra and a sutra.
This beautiful 4-arm bronze Ganesha has facial features and ornate jewellery typical of the Angkor Wat style. The cylindrical piling up of the hair into a high chignon and regimented hair curls demonstrate the ecumenical nature of iconography in the 12th century, the former associated with the supreme form of Vishnu, the latter with Shiva. To the rear the Sampot is fastened with a simple bow in the Angkor Wat style.
The direction of Ganesha's trunk has symbolic meaning. Here, Ganesha's trunk is in the rare straight down position. A Ganesha idol with a straight, downward-pointing trunk is rare and symbolizes the open Sushumna Nadi, representing a state of spiritual balance, physical and mental well-being, and a mind free of worldly desires.
While less common than left or right-bent trunks, this form signifies a spiritual state of complete alignment and focus, making it a desirable idol for home worship, especially for the emotional wellness of children.
Later Ganesh became widely revered as the Remover of Obstacles and more generally as Lord of Beginnings and Lord of Obstacles, patron of arts and sciences and the deity of intellect and wisdom.
