Buddha Statue - Antique Thai Style Large Standing Stone Dvaravati Buddha Statue - 102cm/41" Tall
Measures (Height) 102cm/41"
A large antique Thai style sandstone standing Buddha in 8th century style.
The Buddha is standing samabhanga with both hands performing the vitarka mudra, a teaching gesture. The Buddha's robe, worn in the covering mode, is depicted in a highly stylized manner to achieve a pleasing symmetry. His monastic dress is composed of two traditional elements, an undergarment consisting of a long piece of cloth draped around the hips, and a long loose robe that covers his left shoulder.
The Buddha's hair is arranged in tiers of tight curls that diminish toward the ushnisha. The face has half closed cast down eyes that suggest an inner meditation , a rather sensuous mouth, single arched eyebrow, aquiline nose and a barely dimpled chin.
The ultimate source for this frontal, asexual body form with clinging drapery is fifth-century Gupta through Pala India. The presentation of both hands executing the same mudra is a specific characteristic that developed in Central Thailand during the seventh century and became the hallmark of Dvaravati Buddha images.
The full wide lips of the Buddha suggest a Khmer influence similar to Cambodian Buddha from the Korat Plateau and Siem Reap region. Although the style resembles later Thai Dvaravati images, the present Buddha is more sensuous than most Dvaravati Buddhas. The Buddha here is an appealing blend of Gupta, Dvaravati and Khmer characteristics.
The feet of the Buddha are pinned and loose attached to the torso. Please images for condition.
