Antique Indonesian Style Seated Bronze Javanese Enlightenment Buddha with Disciples - 32cm/13"
Measures (Height) 32cm/13"
An Indonesian (Java) Enlightenment Buddha in 13th century Majapahit style. This lovely Buddha is seated on a lotus leaf pedestal with the disciples of Buddha - Shariputra and Maudgalyayana - depicted at the feet of Buddha, in adoration pose.
The lotus flower represents purity, compassion and the giving of great joy to all.
Here, the Buddha is seated in the Bhumisparsa or 'Calling the Earth to Witness' mudra. With fingers slightly touching the ground this position represents the subduing of Mara (a demon) who bombarded Buddha with demons, monsters, violent storms and the three seductive daughters. Remaining steadfast the Buddha testified to his meritorious past by pointing to the earth and calling the Earth Goddess, Thorani.
Rising from the ground the Earth Goddess wrings the water from her long black hair. By this action she raises a torrential flood that drowns Mara and his army of demons. This gesture reflects this story symbolizing enlightenment, as well as steadfastness and Buddha's achievement of perfection or nirvana.
His robe is draped to leave the right shoulder bare, and a portion of the garment that covers the left wrist falls behind the figure. The lower hem of the robe comes all the way down so that the under-cloth or skirt is completely covered.
The Buddhist disciples - Shariputra and Maudgalyayana are depicted as freestanding sculptures each is sat respectfully with their legs to one side, with hands together in adoration pose. Here the sculptor has imparted a touching sense of youthful tenderness. Contemporaries of Buddha, they were legendary for their piety and power.
Locators hold both Disciples in place with the Buddha.

The image of Ganesha holding a dagger may seem unusual at first, but upon deeper reflection, it reveals layers of spiritual meaning.
The dagger is a powerful symbol of Ganesha’s role as a remover of obstacles—not only the external, material ones but also the internal, mental, and spiritual barriers that keep us from realizing our true potential.
