Antique Indonesian Style Seated Bronze Javanese Protection Buddha Statue - 28cm/11"

An Indonesian (Java) enthroned Protection Buddha, sitting panhandle, in 13th century Majapahit style.
This lovely Buddha is seated on a round double lotus leaf pedestal, itself on a square plinth, in the vajra position with his right leg is panhandle resting upon a lotus flower. The lotus flower represents purity, compassion and the giving of great joy to all.
His robe is draped to leave the right shoulder bare, and a portion of the garment that covers the left wrist falls behind the figure. The lower hem of the robe comes all the way down so that the undercloth or skirt is completely covered.
The Buddha's hands face outwards in the abhaya mudra. The Abhaya mudra "gesture of fearlessness" is a mudra (gesture) that offers protection, reassurance and safety. Dispelling fear and according divine protection and bliss in many Indian religions. His hands are held upright, with the palms facing outwards. This is one of the earliest mudras found depicted on a number of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain images.
The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings. The peaceful countenance of Lord Buddha exudes harmony.
The Buddha is backed by a decorated aureole topped by a lotus flower finial.
He also has a third eye or urna on his forehead symbolizing the ability of Buddha to see past our mundane universe of suffering.
The large ushnisha protuberance on top of his head symbolises his high level of spiritual development.
