An antique Ayutthaya style Buddha statue from Thailand.
The Buddha is stood samabhanga on a round lotus leaf pedestal in the Thoughtful mudra and is the Buddhist symbol for those born on a Friday. Representing an Open-Eye posture, the Buddha stands with hands crossed over his chest, in pensive thought. The right hand is placed over the left. Here, the enlightened Buddha contemplates his achievements and knowledge, standing still for 7 days under the Bodhi Tree to contemplate the suffering of all living things.
The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings. The large, flame shaped, ushnisha protuberance on top of his head symbolizes his high level of spiritual development, in the Ayutthaya style.
The peaceful countenance of Lord Buddha exudes harmony. The casting is beautiful as you can see in the fine details of the face. Each detail is rendered perfectly. The distinctive patina of the piece is also particularly delightful.
