  • Antique Angkor Wat Style Stone Khmer Vishnu Head - 40cm / 16"

    Measures (Height) 40cm/16"

A finely carved Khmer stone head, attributed to Vishnu, displaying strong affinities with the Angkor Wat sculptural tradition and possible influences from the preceding Baphuon style. The composed face, carefully incised moustache, and magnificent tiered headdress combine to create an image of dignified sacred authority.

The deity is portrayed with almond-shaped eyes beneath a continuous, gently arched brow, a firmly modelled nose, and full lips framed by an elegant moustache. Softly rounded cheeks and a restrained smile temper the formal symmetry of the face, giving the sculpture an engaging, quietly assured presence.

Above the forehead, a broad diadem is densely ornamented with foliate patterns, beaded borders, and repeated decorative bands. A tapering, tiered headdress rises above it, each register enriched with petal-like motifs. The contrast between this intricate ornament and the comparatively smooth facial modelling is particularly appealing.

The stone’s warm brown-grey tones, surface variation, and visible abrasions lend texture to the surviving head and neck. Long ears frame the face, while incised bands articulate the neck beneath the chin.

The head is loosely mounted on a wood base with a metal support, providing a restrained presentation that allows the carving to remain the focal point.

    Attribution and Sacred Identity

The elaborate diadem, tiered headdress, and formal facial treatment favour an Angkor Wat-style attribution. The softer modelling of the cheeks and mouth also recalls Baphuon sculpture, in which crowned deity heads can display full lips, softly arched brows, and finely worked foliate tiaras.

    Key Features

    • Khmer stone head attributed to Vishnu.

    • Warm brown-grey stone with visible surface wear and abrasions.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why is this identified as Vishnu?

The crowned male face and formal sacred presentation are compatible with Khmer images of Vishnu. The moustache contributes to that visual comparison, but is not a unique identifying attribute. Without the original body and its emblems, “attributed to Vishnu” is more defensible than “certainly Vishnu.” Comparable museum heads retain similarly qualified identifications.

    Why probably Angkor Wat style?

The broad, richly decorated diadem and emphatic tiered headdress give the head a formal, ornamented character associated with Angkor Wat-style sculpture. This is a stylistic assessment, not proof that the object came from Angkor Wat or was carved during that historical period.

    Could it be Baphuon style?

Yes. The softly modelled cheeks, full lips, and gently shaped brows have Baphuon affinities. Catalogued Baphuon deity heads also combine refined facial modelling with foliate tiaras and conical chignons. The distinction would benefit from examination of the profile, reverse, and headdress construction.

Does “Angkor Wat style” establish its age?

No. A style designation identifies an artistic relationship; it does not independently establish a date. Reliable dating requires direct examination of the stone, carving techniques, surface history, breaks, possible restoration, and documented provenance.

Was the head part of a complete statue?

The surviving head and neck have a fragmentary appearance, but the photograph does not establish the original composition or circumstances of separation. It should not be assigned to a particular temple or excavated statue without supporting evidence.

    Is the display base original?

The wood-and-metal mount is a presentation element, not part of the carved stone figure. The head is loosely mounted, so it should not be assumed to be permanently attached to the support.

    How should it be handled?

Because the head is loosely mounted, do not lift the entire assembly by the stone or assume that moving the base will securely carry it. Support the stone independently when repositioning it, avoid pressure on the ears and crown, and place the display on a stable, level surface.
