An Indonesian (Javanese) enthroned Shiva in 13th‑century Majapahit style, finely cast and richly symbolic.

Shiva stands in samabhanga, a balanced frontal posture, upon a round lotus‑petal pedestal that itself rests on a decorated square base, giving the figure a strong, architectural presence. He wears a simple yet elegant robe with a sash tied at the waist and is adorned with refined jewellery, including a crown and earrings that signal his divine royalty.

As the destroyer within the Hindu Trimurti—alongside Brahma the creator and Vishnu the preserver—Shiva is regarded as limitless, transcendent, and unchanging, as well as patron of yoga, meditation, and the arts. On his forehead appears the trilochana, his third eye, symbol of penetrating wisdom beyond maya (illusion) and duality, and source of his fierce, transformative energy.

Here Shiva is depicted with six arms, each bearing meaningful attributes: a fly whisk, trident, mace, and kalasha, while two hands are joined in dharmachakra mudra. The kalasha, the “overflowing full vase” of Vedic tradition, is revered as a symbol of abundance and the source of life, believed to contain amrita, the elixir of immortality, and thus associated with wisdom, prosperity, and longevity. The dharmachakra mudra—thumb and index finger touching to form a circle—represents the Wheel of Dharma and the union of method and wisdom, evoking generosity and the teaching that sets spiritual understanding in motion.

His hair is arranged in a tripartite chignon crowned with a decorative cockade. Ornamentation is otherwise restrained but precise: a single necklace, diamond‑shaped earrings, a yajnopavita (sacred Brahmanical thread), and one bangle on each wrist. At his feet, a protective cobra rises in readiness, further emphasising his command over powerful forces.

Behind Shiva, a flame‑rimmed aureole accented with lotus motifs encircles the figure, symbolising his divinity and radiant spiritual energy. The aged bronze surface, with its nuanced patina, enhances the sculpture’s depth and sense of history.
