An exceptional and unusual Indonesian (Java) depiction of the Amoghasiddhi Buddha, rendered in the elegant 13th-century Majapahit style.
This serene and powerful Buddha embodies infallible success and the transformation of negative emotions such as jealousy and envy—making it an ideal piece for collectors seeking both spiritual symbolism and aesthetic beauty.
The Buddha stands gracefully upon a round lotus pedestal, itself raised on an ornate, multi-tiered square base. The lotus flower represents purity, compassion and the giving of great joy to all.
His robe is delicately draped in classical Majapahit fashion, leaving the right shoulder exposed, while a finely detailed fold cascades behind the left wrist. The garment falls fully to the base, concealing the under-cloth and emphasizing the sculpture’s refined silhouette.
Behind the figure, the pedestal rises into a radiant aureole with a flaming border, symbolizing divine energy and enlightenment. The Buddha’s hands are held in deeply meaningful gestures: the right hand in the wish-fulfilling mudra (varada), extended downward with the palm outward, signifying generosity and compassion; the left hand in the abhaya mudra, raised in reassurance, offering protection, fearlessness, and spiritual refuge. This ancient gesture is one of the earliest found across Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain traditions.
A finely rendered urna, or third eye, adorns the Buddha’s forehead, representing transcendent wisdom and the ability to perceive beyond the illusions of the material world.
Amoghasiddhi, whose name means “Unfailing Success,” is one of the Five Dhyani Buddhas and symbolizes the accomplishment of all actions. Meditation upon him is believed to overcome envy and jealousy, transforming these impulses into wisdom and purposeful action.
This striking sculpture is not only a testament to the artistic sophistication of Majapahit Java but also a deeply symbolic object of spiritual aspiration and inner transformation.
