An antique Sri Lanka style bronze Buddha Shakyamuni standing samabhanga on a simple circular pedestal.
The figure is remarkable for its realistic yet delicate delineation of the limbs and the robe which seems to cling to the body. The garment (sanghati) covers both shoulders. The hands are held out in the vitarka mudra of teaching. A very naturalistic succession of wavy folds on the surface of his body reveals the soft contours of the body underneath. His face is handsome with a slight smile and straight, aquiline nose.
The vitarka mudra or gesture promotes discussion and transmission of Buddhist teaching. It is done by joining the tips of the thumb and the index together, and keeping the other fingers straight very much like the abhaya and varada mudrās but with the thumbs touching the index fingers.
Here the Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow. He has a large lotus flower shaped ushnisha protuberance on top of his head, symbolizing his high level of spiritual development. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings. The casting is beautiful as you can see in the fine details of the face. Each detail is rendered perfectly.
