An antique Khmer-style stone Brahma head in the Cambodian Koh Ker tradition. Brahma is the Hindu god of creation and one of the Trimurti, alongside Vishnu and Shiva.
The Koh Ker period of Cambodian history (928–944 CE) marks a distinctive phase in the Khmer Empire, known for its monumental architecture and powerful sculptural style. Although royal devotion during this era centred primarily on Shiva, Brahma—the creator in Hindu cosmology—retained an important, if more understated, role within the broader religious landscape. Together, the Hindu trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva shaped the spiritual and political identity of the Khmer kingdom.
In Hindu thought, Brahma is responsible for the creation of the universe and all living beings. Depicted here with four heads, he symbolises omniscience and the ability to perceive in all directions, embodying the continuous process of creation that complements Vishnu’s preservation and Shiva’s transformation. His presence in temple art serves as a reminder of cosmic balance and the perpetual unfolding of existence.
This compelling image displays the hallmark power and refinement of the Koh Ker style. The face is soft yet authoritative, crowned with an elaborate tiara or mukuta, reflecting a decorative tradition that flourished in Cambodia from the 10th century through the post‑Angkor period.
