An antique Japanese style meditation Amitabha Buddha, quietly radiant and deeply contemplative.
Amitabha Buddha symbolises boundless mercy and wisdom, and is central to Pure Land practice in which faith and meditation on his name become antidotes to attachment and desire. He presides over Sukhavati, the Western Paradise or Pure Land, where those reborn in his realm experience the joy of learning the dharma directly from Amitabha until they are ready to enter Nirvana. This serene sculpture captures that promise of peaceful awakening.
The Buddha is seated in Dhyana mudrā, the classical meditation posture, with both hands resting in the lap, palms facing upward, right hand gently placed over the left. This gesture embodies the energy of deep contemplation, inner stillness and unity with higher truth. His countenance is peaceful, with downcast introspective eyes, a firm yet gentle brow and softly rounded features that invite quiet reflection. The elongated earlobes recall his youth as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings, while the circular urna, or third eye, on his forehead signifies spiritual insight.
Simple, flowing robes cascade in soft folds over crossed legs, emphasising the compact, grounded form of the figure. The surface shows an attractive, time‑worn patina with subtle variations of tone that highlight the modelling and lend the piece warmth and character.
