Shiva Statue - Antique Indonesian Style Bronze Javanese Standing 4-Arm Shiva Statue - 52cm/21"
Measures (Height) 52cm/21"
An Indonesian (Java) Shiva in refined 13th‑century Majapahit style, standing in poised samabhanga upon a round double‑lotus pedestal. The lotus symbolises purity, compassion, and the joyful unfolding of spiritual awakening.
In Hinduism, Lord Shiva is one of the most complex and revered deities, known as the “Destroyer” within the holy Trimurti alongside Brahma the Creator and Vishnu the Preserver. His many aspects embody the cyclical nature of existence—creation, preservation, destruction, and rebirth—while he himself remains limitless, transcendent, and unchanging. He is also honoured as the patron god of yoga, meditation, and the arts.
Here Shiva is depicted with four arms, holding mala beads, a fly whisk, and a kalasha, with the fourth hand raised in a gesture of teaching. The kalasha, the “overflowing full vase” of Vedic tradition, is a symbol of abundance and the source of life, believed to contain amrita, the elixir of immortality; it thus represents wisdom, prosperity, and spiritual fulfilment. The mala and fly whisk further emphasise his roles as ascetic, teacher, and divine protector.
He is dressed in a richly decorated robe with a sash tied at the waist and adorned with ornate jewellery, including a crown and earrings. His hair is arranged in a tripartite chignon decorated with a small cockade, and he is discreetly embellished with a necklace, diamond‑shaped earrings, the sacred yajnopavita (Brahmanical thread), and a single bangle on each wrist. The crescent moon rests upon his head, its waxing and waning symbolising the passage of time and cosmic cycles; Shiva, as eternal reality, stands beyond these cycles, wearing time itself merely as an ornament.
On his forehead appears the trilochana, the third eye of Shiva—the Three‑Eyed Lord. This is the eye of wisdom, free from maya, the illusions and dualities of worldly life, and is regarded as the source of his untamed spiritual energy and power to burn away ignorance.
Shiva is widely worshipped across India, Southeast Asia, and beyond, with devotees seeking his blessings for inner peace, spiritual growth, and the removal of obstacles. Devotion to him extends far beyond ritual, encompassing the pursuit of inner transformation, self‑realisation, and a deeper understanding of life’s mysteries. This Majapahit‑style sculpture captures that profound symbolism, presenting Shiva as a timeless icon of cosmic balance, transformation, and the potential for transcendence through meditation and insight.
