Antique Khmer Style Bronze Banteay Srei style Standing Apsara or Angel - 69cm/28"
Measurements - H69cm/28"
An antique Khmer style bronze Apsara or Heavenly angel in pre-Angkor Banteay Srei style.
This Apsara image can be seen throughout the 10th century Banteay Srei temple complex. Here Apsara is clothed in a simple sampot can kpin that is slightly lower at the front and higher at the back. The pleated surface of the sampot can kpin provides an interesting contrast with the smooth unadorned stomach and chest area.
The face is defined by slightly arched eyebrows, full rimmed lips and. rather broad, flat nose.
The figure radiates a serenity and quiet power resplendid with the sensuality of the Banteay Srei style.
Here Apsara holds a lotus flower. The lotus flower represents purity, compassion and the giving of great joy to all.
The Apsara is a female spirit of the clouds and waters in Hindu and Buddhist mythology - a 'celestial nymph' or 'celestial maiden'. Apsaras are beautiful, supernatural female beings. They are youthful and elegant, and superb in the art of dancing. They are often the wives of the Gandharvas, the court musicians of Indra. They dance to the music made by the Gandharvas, usually in the palaces of the gods, entertain and sometimes seduce gods and men.
As caretakers of fallen heroes, they may be compared to the valkyries of Norse mythology. As etherial beings who inhabit the skies, and are often depicted taking flight, or at service of a god, they may be compared to Angels. Apsaras are said to be able to change their shape at will, and rule over the fortunes of gaming and gambling. They are also associated with fertility rites.
