Antique Preah-Ko Style Bronze Vishnu Head - Protector & Preserver - 21cm/8"
Measures (Height) 21cm/8"
An exceptional antique Preah Ko style bronze Vishnu head, elegantly mounted on a wooden base.
This striking representation of Vishnu embodies quiet authority, conveyed through the deity’s iconic downcast gaze and serene, composed expression. The face is broad and contemplative, with a strong, balanced silhouette characteristic of the early Angkorian aesthetic. Though seemingly restrained, the features subtly express prana—the inner breath or life force—suggesting a profound, superhuman presence.
The Preah Ko style marks a pivotal moment in Khmer art, where sculptural conventions became more defined and distinctly Angkorian. This is evident in the refined treatment of the tiara and chignon headdress. The earlier mitre form seen in pre-Angkorian depictions evolves here into a beautifully structured, multi-tiered, pagoda-like crown. It is framed by an elaborate diadem composed of two decorative registers: a lower band of geometric lozenges and an upper band of alternating floral stems and petals, symbolising both order and vitality.
Vishnu’s facial features are rendered with remarkable precision—a prominent nose, gently protruding lower lip, and firm, well-defined chin—each contributing to a sense of strength and divine composure. The sculpture achieves a harmonious balance of proportion, an essential quality in fine representations of Vishnu, reflecting both physical perfection and spiritual equilibrium.
The bronze casting is of particularly high quality, with crisp detailing and smooth transitions across the surface. Subtle modelling around the eyes, lips, and headdress reveals the hand of a skilled artisan, while the natural patina enhances the sculpture’s depth and character.
Mounted on a custom wooden base, this piece is ready for display, making it an ideal addition for collectors, connoisseurs of Southeast Asian art, or those seeking a meaningful and visually compelling spiritual object.
As the preserver and protector within the Hindu trinity, Vishnu represents cosmic order, balance, and benevolence—qualities beautifully embodied in this timeless sculpture.
