An antique Koh Ker style Cambodian Shiva. The power emanating from this compelling Shiva image truly characterises the beautiful Koh Ker style.
As is typical with this style the Shiva has a soft face and is adorned with scalloped elongated earrings. This handsome head is identified by the third eye marking his forehead.
The Trilochana of Shiva can be seen on his forehead - the Three-Eyed Lord. It is the eye of wisdom, free from Maya, the illusion, and duality of life. It is also believed to be the source of his untamed energy.
The face has eyebrows described by a continuous ridged line, a moustache, a beard, rimmed lips and wide open eyes. The inner rims of the ears are scalloped, in classic Khmer style.
His tiara or mukuta is also richly decorated. A tradition that continued to develop in Cambodia from the 9th century to the post-Angkor period.
As the destroyer, Shiva is regarded as limitless, transcendent and unchanging. Shiva is also regarded as the patron god of yoga, meditation and arts The Shiva is mounted on wood (later).
