  • Antique Khmer Style Standing Bronze Bayon Ganesha Statue - 40cm/16"

    Measures (Height) 40cm/16"

An antique Khmer Bayon‑style standing Ganesha, finely cast in bronze and rich with temple character.

This striking fourarmed figure belongs to the post‑Angkor Wat Bayon tradition, where Hindu imagery was reinterpreted through a distinctly Khmer lens. Ganesha stands upright on a simple circular pedestal, his elongated body and poised stance giving the sculpture a quietly regal presence. The face and jewellery bear all the hallmarks of Bayon style: strong features, deeply carved eyes and an ornate crown that rises in layered tiers.

The hair is piled into a tall cylindrical chignon, its regimented curls recalling the shared, ecumenical iconography of the Bayon period—where elements linked to Vishnu and Shiva mingle in a unified visual language. Around the waist, he wears a finely detailed sampot, fastened at the back with a butterfly‑shaped bow typical of post‑Angkor Wat dress. The surface shows a wonderfully mottled dark patina with soft highlights on edges and raised details, giving the bronze depth and a sense of long, dignified age.

Ganesha, the elephant‑headed son of Shiva, holds his broken tusk in one hand—a symbol of sacrifice and the power of knowledge—and a bowl of sweetmeats in another, representing the rewards of spiritual effort and the sweetness of wisdom. In his remaining hands he carries a chakra (discus) and a conch shell. The chakra evokes his role as remover of obstacles in the mental and spiritual realms, cutting through ignorance and confusion, while the conch resonates with auspicious sound and celebration. Ganesha is often shown enjoying music and beauty; here, the conch subtly hints at his joy in life’s pleasures even as he guides devotees toward deeper insight.

The trunk curves gracefully to his left, a direction traditionally associated with worldly success and harmonious domestic life—ideal for grihasthas, or householders. In his earliest Indian forms, Ganesha was closely linked with fertility and the flourishing of life. Over time he became widely revered as the Remover of Obstacles, Lord of Beginnings, patron of arts and sciences, and deity of intellect and wisdom. This Khmer interpretation preserves that layered identity while adding its own sculptural elegance.

Traditional in appearance yet full of personality, this Bayon‑style standing Ganesha will add a distinctive touch to any room—equally at home anchoring a shelf, altar or console table. One of the most recognisable of all Asian deities, he brings with him a blend of protection, prosperity and endlessly timeless style.

My partner got back from Thailand this evening, and was surprised and delighted to see the walking Buddha statue I bought from you recently. We both like it very much indeed - you don't see so many walking Buddha statues, and this one is very well moulded and finely detailed. You also packed it very thoroughly for posting. So thank you very much! It looks very beautiful in our hall, facing visitors as they come through our front door.
