An antique Thai Sukhothai-style reclining Buddha depicting the Buddha in the nirvana, or enlightenment, pose. The pronounced ushnisha, the cranial protuberance atop his head, signifies his exceptionally high level of spiritual attainment.
The Buddha’s expression is serene and contemplative, with downcast, introspective eyes and a steady, composed brow. His elongated earlobes recall his youth as a prince adorned with heavy gold earrings, a reminder of the worldly life he renounced. The casting is refined, with beautifully rendered facial features and robe detailing, and the surface bears a particularly attractive, characterful patina.
Reclining gracefully on his side in calm repose, the Buddha is shown in the final moments before his passing, a pose often referred to as the Sleeping Buddha. It symbolises his attainment of nirvana, the state in which his enlightened consciousness finally transcends the cycle of samsara. Aware of the exact moment of his death, the Buddha lay down to rest and passed peacefully, embodying ultimate serenity and release.
He rests on a double lotus pedestal. The lotus, rising pure and beautiful from muddy waters, represents the journey to enlightenment and the fulfilment that follows spiritual awakening. In Eastern traditions it appears both as a sacred seat and a symbolic motif, expressing the idea that, like the lotus, we can rise above worldly attachments and cultivate inner purity in our search for true happiness.
