Votive Panel - Antique Khmer Style Bronze Naga Buddha Votive Panel - 15cm/6"
Measures (Height) 15cm/6"
An antique Khmer-style bronze votive panel, finely cast as a 12th-century Bayon-period triptych depicting the Meditation Buddha flanked by Vishnu and Lakshmi. This evocative piece beautifully reflects the rich devotional and artistic traditions of the post-Angkor era.
At the centre, the Buddha is seated in serene meditation upon a three-tiered throne, sheltered by the flaring multi-headed hood of the Naga king Muchalinda, who rises protectively behind him. The Buddha’s hands rest in the Dhyana mudra, the gesture of deep contemplation and inner stillness, symbolising focused meditation and the path toward enlightenment.
On either side stand Vishnu and Lakshmi, shown in graceful sambhanga on simple pedestals, a grouping that reflects the harmonious coexistence of Buddhist and Hindu devotion in Khmer culture during the Bayon period. Vishnu, the preserver, and Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and grace, together frame the meditating Buddha, underscoring themes of protection, abundance, and spiritual balance.
Above the central triptych appears a further tier of sacred figures: a seated Enlightenment Buddha, a standing Buddha, and Hevajra, one of the principal yidams (fully enlightened beings) in Tantric or Vajrayana Buddhism, associated with profound meditative practice and transformative wisdom. This layered arrangement of deities creates a compact yet powerful vertical mandala of spiritual protection and blessing.
Votive panels such as this hold deep spiritual and cultural significance in the Buddhist world, serving as offerings of devotion, gratitude, and aspiration for enlightenment. Commissioned or donated by devotees and pilgrims, they embody the practice of merit-making, where creating and offering sacred images is believed to generate positive karma, purify the mind, and support progress on the path beyond samsara, the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth.
These plaques were often produced as holy souvenirs for pilgrims, to be cherished at home or deposited at temples, caves, and shrines as tangible expressions of faith and remembrance. Khmer-style votive panels have been discovered at sacred sites across Southeast Asia, either locally made in Khmer tradition or carried over distances as treasured offerings.
More than devotional objects, votive panels form a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms, uniting artistic craftsmanship with heartfelt intention. They encapsulate core Buddhist values of compassion, wisdom, and the aspiration for awakening, while preserving the visual language of a sophisticated religious culture.
With its intricate iconography, elegant composition, and gently aged patina, this antique Khmer-style votive panel offers both historical depth and spiritual presence. Whether displayed in a home, office, shrine, or meditation space, it brings a sense of serenity, protection, and timeless sacred beauty to its surroundings
