The Buddha is seated on a double-lotus pedestal in the adamantine posture of vajraparyankasana, the right leg crossed over the left with the soles of both feet turned upward, signifying unshakable stability in meditation. His robe is elegantly draped over the left shoulder, with a fold of cloth falling behind the wrist, and the lower hem descends fully so that the under-robe is completely concealed. Enthroned in deep contemplation upon an intricate base, he radiates quiet dignity and poise.
Behind him rises a refined aureole topped with a lotus finial, a clear marker of his divinity and awakened nature. Amitabha’s hands rest in the meditation mudra, fingers lightly touching and folded over the lap with palms facing upward, a gesture expressing purity, gentleness, and inner composure. Nestled in his hands is an alms bowl, symbolising charity, generosity, and the Buddha’s compassionate vow to nourish all beings. His downcast eyes and serene, compassionate face seem to bestow blessing, peace, and inner stillness on all who gaze upon him.
Amitabha Buddha represents mercy and wisdom, and tantric meditation upon him is traditionally regarded as an antidote to desire and attachment. He presides over Sukhavati, the Western Paradise or Pure Land, where those reborn enjoy the bliss of hearing Amitabha teach the Dharma until they are ready to attain nirvana. On his forehead, a subtle third eye or urna indicates the Buddha’s ability to see beyond the ordinary world of suffering, into the true nature of reality. The prominent ushnisha, the cranial protuberance crowning his head, signifies his advanced spiritual realisation and complete enlightenment.
