Antique Thai Style Bronze Seated Sukhothai Meditation Buddha Statue - 15cm/6"
Measures (Height) 15cm/6"
An antique Thai style seated bronze Meditation Buddha in the 13th century Sukhothai style.
The Buddha is seated on a simple pedestal in the Dhyana mudra or 'Meditation Position'. This hand gesture promotes the energy of meditation, deep contemplation and unity with higher energy.
The Meditation Buddha, also known as Dhyana Mudra or Samadhi Mudra, is an iconic representation of the Buddha in a contemplative and meditative posture. This image holds deep significance within Buddhist tradition, conveying essential teachings and embodying the virtues of inner peace, mindfulness, and spiritual reflection.
As is traditional, the Meditation Buddha is depicted here in a seated posture, with both legs crossed in the half-lotus position. The hands are placed in the Dhyana Mudra, where the right hand rests on top of the left hand, with the thumbs gently touching, forming a subtle triangle or circle. The Buddha's back is straight, and the gaze is lowered, signifying deep concentration and inner reflection.
The Meditation or Dhyana Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow. This hand gesture promotes the energy of meditation, deep contemplation and unity with higher energy.
The bodies profile is with broad shoulders and slender waist, covered by a Sanghati robe worn diagonally over the left shoulder, and is graced by a pleated flap draped to the navel. The right shoulder is left bare.
The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow. In typical Sukhothai style a flaming ushnisa, symbolising his high level of spiritual development, surmounts the head of Buddha. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings.
The casting is lovely as you can see in the fine details of the face. Each detail is rendered perfectly. The distinctive patina of the piece is also particularly delightful. This traditional in appearance piece is sure to add serenity to your home, office or sacred space.

The rise of Brahma in Thailand is a testament to the blending of Hindu and Buddhist traditions that have shaped Thai culture over centuries.
While Brahma is not a central figure in Thai Buddhism, his presence as Phra Phrom signifies the deep-rooted connections between the two religions and the enduring legacy of Hinduism in Southeast Asia.
