Antique Khmer Style Bronze Meditation Jayavarman VII Statue - 26cm/10"
Measures - (Height) 26cm/10"
A delightful antique Khmer-style bronze sculpture of King Jayavarman VII, one of the most revered rulers of the Angkor period. Unusually, this representation omits overt royal or divine regalia, presenting the king instead in a deeply contemplative, devotional state—reflecting his profound commitment to Mahayana Buddhism.
The king is seated in meditation, his hands held together in a gesture of reverence and inner focus. His hair is drawn back and gathered into a small chignon, in keeping with traditional Khmer iconography. The face is sensitively modelled, with softly closed eyes, a gentle, knowing smile, a broad forehead, and elongated earlobes. These features exemplify classical Khmer physiognomy and convey a sense of serenity, compassion, and spiritual authority—qualities closely associated with Jayavarman VII himself.
Often referred to as the “King of Compassion,” Jayavarman VII was responsible for an extraordinary period of building across the Khmer Empire, including many of the most iconic monuments of Angkor. At the heart of Angkor Thom stands the Bayon Temple, renowned for its towers bearing serene faces widely believed to be inspired by the king’s own likeness. These faces, with their calm, enigmatic smiles, have come to define the so-called “Khmer smile.”
The bronze casting is of particularly fine quality, evident in the delicate rendering of the facial features and overall form. The surface displays a rich, attractive patina, enhancing both the depth and authenticity of the piece.
This sculpture radiates tranquillity and spiritual depth, making it an ideal addition to a home, office, or sacred space. Both historically significant and aesthetically refined, it serves as a timeless reminder of one of Southeast Asia’s greatest monarchs and the enduring legacy of Khmer art.

Thank you so very much! Well, I needed Buddha here -- and I certainly now have Buddha here in many ways and many forms -- with thanks to HDAsianArt. Each statue you've sent has worked out very well -- each in its own way -- each combined in settings with other art pieces -- each has blended well -- finishing off different areas of my home -- and all communicates well to tell a story of different aspects of my life. I intentionally chose your pieces -- to get away from the "norm" of beautiful gild Buddhas that everyone has -- your pieces are quite unique -- and a bit more "real" -- which serves my purpose well. So, thank you.
