Antique Khmer Style Bronze Lakshmi / Devi Consort of Vishnu Statue - 66cm/26"
Measurements H 66cm/26"
An antique Khmer style bronze Lakshmi, devi or Goddess sculpture in the Angkor Wat style.
Lakshmi is the Hindu goddess of wealth, prosperity (both material and spiritual), light, wisdom, fortune, fertility, generosity and courage. The embodiment of beauty, grace and charm. Also called Mahalakshmi, she is said to bring good luck, and is believed to protect her devotees from all kinds of misery and money-related sorrows.
Lakshmi is clothed in a long pleated sampot, with an over fold and a plain cloth sash arranged in twelfth century style. The lower edge of the central pleat opens into an oblique ornate fishtail, in front, typical of the Angkor Wat style. The knot that fastens the diadem is the same kind of knot used to tie the diadem on other Angkor Wat style pieces.
On her head Lakshmi wears a diadem and conical chignon. Jewellery adorns her neck and arms. The ears are cast with the typical Khmer tripartite scalloping of the inner rim. The traditional beauty lines on her neck emphasise her femininity.
The face displays rimmed lips, slightly cast down eyes, and eyebrows that form one continuous ridge across the forehead. Here Lakshmi holds a lotus flower in her left hand. This represents purity, compassion and the giving of great joy to all.
The Lakshmi is mounted on a bronze base which forms part of the sculpture. The malachite patina and details of this piece are particularly appealing.
This traditional in appearance piece is sure to add a unique touch to any room of your home or workplace. One of the most recognizable of the Asian deities this representation of the consort of Vishnu is sure to enlighten your home with endlessly timeless style.
