Ganesha Statue - Antique Javanese Style Wood Mounted Majapahit Ganesha Statue - 35.5cm/14"
Measures (Height) 35.5cm/14"
An antique Javanese‑style carved wood Ganesha mask from Indonesia, richly painted and full of character.
Ganesha, the elephant‑headed son of Shiva, appears here as a vibrant, frontal head, crowned and flanked by exuberant foliate scrolls. The face is deeply carved, with arched brows, expressive eyes and a gently smiling mouth that give the deity a warm, approachable presence. Layers of red, blue and black pigment sit beneath worn gold leaf style, creating a softly weathered surface that speaks of age and long use, while still retaining a remarkable richness of colour.
The direction of Ganesha’s trunk is especially significant in this piece. Curving to his right, it traditionally evokes moksha—liberation or enlightenment—and is associated with a more ascetic, spiritually intense aspect of the god. This makes the mask an ideal companion for those drawn to Ganesha not only as a bringer of luck, but as a guide on the deeper path of inner transformation.
Intricate carving around the headdress and ears reflects the Javanese love of ornate detail. The tall, temple‑like crown, wing‑like side panels and floral motifs link Ganesha to royal and theatrical traditions in Indonesia, where such masks have long bridged sacred story and performance. The slightly distressed paintwork and softened edges lend the piece a wonderful patina, enhancing its sense of history and authenticity.
In early Indian contexts, Ganesha was closely linked with fertility and the flourishing of life. Over centuries he came to be universally honoured as the Remover of Obstacles, Lord of Beginnings, patron of the arts and sciences, and deity of intellect and wisdom. This mask captures that blend of joy and gravitas: playful in colour and expression, yet carrying strong protective and auspicious symbolism.
Mounted on a stand or hung as a wall piece, this antique Javanese style Ganesha brings an immediate focal point to any room—a striking fusion of folk energy, devotional art and time‑softened texture. One of the most recognisable of all Asian deities, he will enliven your home with personality, spiritual depth and endlessly timeless style.

My partner got back from Thailand this evening, and was surprised and delighted to see the walking Buddha statue I bought from you recently. We both like it very much indeed - you don't see so many walking Buddha statues, and this one is very well moulded and finely detailed. You also packed it very thoroughly for posting. So thank you very much! It looks very beautiful in our hall, facing visitors as they come through our front door.
