An antique Thai style wooden reclining Buddha.

The Buddha is shown in the nirvana pose, lying peacefully on his side with flowing robes, capturing the moment of his final passing into complete enlightenment. The prominent ushnisha, the cranial protuberance at the top of his head, symbolises his advanced spiritual development. His features are calm and composed, with downcast, introspective eyes and a firm brow, while the elongated earlobes recall his youth as a prince adorned with heavy gold earrings.

This reclining, or “sleeping,” Buddha represents the Buddha’s conscious acceptance of death and his serene transition into nirvana, his enlightened mind finally freed from the cycle of samsara. In Thai Buddhism, this pose is also associated with those born on a Tuesday, adding an extra layer of astrological and devotional significance.

The sculpture is finely detailed, from the gentle modelling of the face to the carefully rendered toes, each element crisply and confidently carved. One of the most recognisable images in Asian sacred art, this graceful reclining Buddha will bring a sense of harmony, contemplation, and timeless elegance to any home or sacred space.
