An antique Khmer style Meditation Buddha, displaying characteristics of the 6th-century Phnom Da period, this sculpture radiates stillness and refined spiritual presence. The Buddha’s face shows a peaceful, introspective countenance, with gently downcast eyes and a firm, composed brow that together exude harmony and inner calm.
The Buddha is seated on a simple pedestal, his hands resting in the Dhyana Mudra, or meditation gesture, with fingers lightly touching and folded in his lap, palms turned upward. This classic posture evokes deep contemplation, focused mindfulness, and unity with higher spiritual energy. His body is modeled with broad shoulders and a slender waist, wrapped in a Sanghati robe worn diagonally across the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder bare in traditional Khmer fashion.
Crowning the head is a prominent lotus-bud ushnisha, symbolising advanced spiritual development and awakening. The lotus itself, so central in Eastern religions, represents enlightenment and the fulfilment that follows; rising pure and beautiful from murky waters, it reminds the viewer to move beyond attachment to the material world and to cultivate inner spirituality in the search for true happiness.
The Buddha’s features are finely rendered: an oval face with almond-shaped, downcast eyes, gracefully curved brows meeting above a prominent nose, and softly contoured lips that suggest a gentle, exalted smile. Tight curls of hair frame the face in a neat line, while the elongated earlobes recall his princely youth, when heavy gold earrings once adorned them.
