Buddha Statue - Antique Indonesian Style Bronze Javanese Teaching Buddha - 34cm/14"
Measures (Height) 34cm/14"
A beautifully cast Indonesian (Java) Buddha in 13th century Majapahit style.
This magnificent Buddha is stood samapada, loose mounted to a wood pedestal.
His robe cascades pleasingly over his left shoulder. A portion of the garment that covers the left wrist falls behind the figure. The lower hem of the robe falls all the way down so that the under-cloth or skirt is completely covered. The hem of the robe is held in the left hand, in traditional Indonesian style.
Although the style resembles Dvaravati images carved in Thailand, the present Buddha is more sensuous than most Dvaravati Buddhas. The Buddha here is an appealing blend of Gupta, Dvaravati, Khmer and Indonesian characteristics.
He holds his hands in the Teaching or dharmachakra mudra. In sanskrit dharmachakra means the 'Wheel of Dharma'. This mudra symbolises one of the most important moments in the life of Buddha, the occasion when he preached to his companions the first sermon after his Enlightenment in the Deer Park at Sarnath. It therefore denotes the setting into motion of the Wheel of the teaching of the Dharma.
In this mudra the thumb and index finger touch at their tips to form a circle. This circle represents the Wheel of Dharma, or in metaphysical terms, the union of method and wisdom. This symbolises generosity.
A simple aureole or halo can be seen behind his head. This confirms his divinity.
A truly delightful and unusual Buddha in excellent condition, with wonderful detail and patina.

The Wednesday Evening Buddha, or Phra Lae Lei, with its unique story of the Buddha receiving offerings from a monkey and an elephant, presents us with profound lessons about generosity, humility, and interconnectedness.
This story teaches that spiritual offerings are not defined by material wealth or outward appearances but by the intention behind them.
