  • Antique Khmer Stone Mounted Yaksha Temple Guardian - 57cm / 23"

    Angkor Wat Style

    Measures (Height) 57cm/23"

A commanding antique Khmer-style stone head depicting a Yaksha, or protective guardian, in the richly ornamented Angkor Wat manner. Measuring approximately 57 cm / 23 inches high, the sculpture is presented on a black wood display base with a metal support, allowing its expressive face and elaborate headdress to take centre stage.

The guardian’s face is distinguished by prominent rounded eyes, strongly arched brows, and a broad nose. A curling moustache frames the mouth, where visible teeth and projecting fangs lend the figure a formidable presence. A finely textured beard follows the chin, while elongated ears with substantial pendant ornaments complete the ceremonial appearance.

Above the forehead, a broad diadem is worked with geometric, floral, and beaded decoration. A tiered, petal-like chignon rises behind it, creating an architectural silhouette that contrasts with the rounded modelling of the cheeks. The combination of intricate ornament and emphatic facial features gives the head considerable visual energy.

Warm brown stone tones highlight the carved details, while surface variation, abrasions, and small losses contribute to its textured appearance. The work offers a striking focal point for a collection of Khmer-inspired sculpture, bringing a sense of watchfulness and historic artistic character to a home, office, or dedicated display space.

The Yaksha: Nature Spirit and Guardian

Yakshas are a broad class of supernatural beings found in Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions. Associated with trees, water, fertility, wilderness, and hidden treasure, they can appear as benevolent protectors or powerful, unpredictable spirits. Their imagery helped shape later representations of divine attendants and guardians throughout Asian art.

In a temple setting, the fierce appearance of a guardian need not signify evil. Protruding eyes and fangs communicate formidable power directed toward protecting a sacred place. A comparable Khmer head catalogued by Christie’s is identified as probably a yaksha on precisely these grounds, while acknowledging the difficulty of identifying a head without its original body and attributes.

This sculpture is therefore appropriately described as a yaksha or guardian head. Its watchful expression is central to its appeal: rather than the inward serenity of a Buddha, it conveys vigilance, strength, and protective authority.

    Style and Presentation

The ornamental diadem and tiered chignon support the supplied Angkor Wat-style description. This designation refers to the work’s artistic character; it does not by itself establish a historical date or prove that the sculpture originated at Angkor Wat.

The head and surviving neck have a fragmentary form that may relate to a larger composition. However, its original scale, location, and architectural role cannot be determined from the photograph alone.

The black base and metal support provide a restrained presentation, setting off the stone’s warm colour and allowing the face to be viewed clearly.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is a Yaksha?

A yaksha is a nature spirit associated with the resources and powers of the natural world, including trees, water, fertility, and buried treasure. Yakshas appear in Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions and can take on protective roles in religious art.

Why does the guardian have bulging eyes and fangs?

These features communicate supernatural strength and vigilance. In protective sculpture, a fearsome face can serve to discourage harmful influences rather than frighten worshippers. Protruding eyes and fangs are also used to support a yaksha identification in catalogued Khmer guardian heads.

Is a Yaksha the same as a demon?

Not necessarily. Yakshas encompass both benevolent and dangerous beings. Describing this work simply as a “demon” would overlook its likely protective function and the broader nature-spirit tradition to which it belongs.

    Is the stone sandstone?

The surface appears compatible with a fine-grained stone, but its precise geological identification has not been confirmed.
