Antique Indonesian Style Seated Bronze Javanese Protection Buddha Statue - 31cm/12"
Measures (Height) 31cm/12"
An Indonesian (Java) enthroned Protection Buddha, surrounded by acolytes of Buddha in Meditation pose, rendered in classic 13th‑century Majapahit style. This finely cast ensemble shows the central Buddha seated in quiet authority on a round double lotus pedestal set upon a square plinth, his legs arranged in a relaxed vajra position with the right leg extending in a graceful panhandle over a lotus blossom. The lotus represents purity, compassion and the bestowal of great joy on all beings.
His robe is draped to leave the right shoulder bare, with a section of cloth covering the left wrist and falling behind the figure; the lower hem descends fully so that the under‑skirt is completely concealed, a detail that emphasises monastic simplicity. The Buddha’s right hand is raised outward in the abhaya mudra, the “gesture of fearlessness,” offering protection, reassurance and safety and dispelling fear for those who approach.
On either side sit attendant Buddhas in Dhyana mudra or Meditation pose, each enthroned on their own double lotus pedestal. Their hands rest gently in the lap with fingers barely touching and palms facing upward, a gesture that promotes the energy of deep contemplation and unity with higher awareness. Each attendant Buddha cradles an alms bowl, a symbol of charity, generosity and the Buddha’s willingness to receive and transform offerings of the world into spiritual nourishment.
The central Protection Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes, firm brow and elongated earlobes stretched from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings, all hallmarks of enlightened renunciation. Behind the figures rises an ornate aureole with lotus‑leaf border and lotus finial, framing the group in a mandorla of light and reinforcing their sacred presence. The subtle third eye (urna) on the main Buddha’s forehead symbolises his ability to see beyond the mundane universe of suffering, while the large ushnisha protuberance atop his head marks his advanced spiritual attainment.
Richly weathered surfaces and a complex green‑brown patina lend this Majapahit‑style relief a powerful sense of age and devotional history. As an enthroned Protection Buddha flanked by Meditation Buddhas, the piece weaves together themes of fearless compassion, contemplative stillness and enlightened guidance, making it an exceptional focal point for a home, office or dedicated sacred space.

The Ganesh is really great, wish I could keep it. It is a present for someone who is starting his own lab so Ganesh, the remover of obstacles seemed like the perfect thing.
