Antique Banteay Srei Style Khmer Stone Shiva Head - The Destroyer - 31cm/12"
Measures (Height) 31cm/12"
An elegant head of Shiva in the Cambodian antique Banteay Srei style. The power emanating from this compelling Shiva image characterises the Banteay Srei style.
As is typical with this style the Shiva has a soft face with minimal adornments. Shiva is identified by his moustache, beard and the third eye carved on his forehead.
The head of the sculpture is in the Banteay Srei style and may originally have been dedicated to the god Vishnu, with the image being altered at a later date. The inner rims of the ears display the characteristic tripart scalloped treatment. The face appears typically Khmer, with a serene expression, incised almond-shaped eyes, connected eyebrows above a well-shaped broad nose, wide plump mouth and elongated earlobe. His face is slightly polished to reveal a smooth, deep brown patina.
The ornate carving of the diadem provides a delightful contrast with the smooth facial features. The Trilochana of Shiva can be seen on his forehead - the Three-Eyed Lord. It is the eye of wisdom, free from Maya, the illusion, and duality of life. It is also believed to be the source of his untamed energy. A conical two tier chignon-cover surmounts the head and is surrounded by a diadem tied in the back with a bow knot, typical of the Banteay Srei period.
Shiva is unadorned and presumably was honoured with real jewellery during feast days and ceremonies. The Shiva embodies authority with its iconic downcast gaze and large unexpressive face. The general silhouette is heavier. Each detail is rendered perfectly. The features suggest the prana, or inner breath, that signifies superhuman power. As with images from this period, the ornamentation reflects a perfect mastery of sculpting and fluidity. Facial features of the statue reflect the delicate characteristics of the Banteay Srei style.
The deity is masterfully modelled in realistic human form. The power of Shiva is limitless, transcendent and unchanging as he removes all evil from the world. For the devotee Shiva offers protection, guidance and a sense of belonging. Shiva is also regarded as the patron god of yoga, meditation and arts. The Shiva is mounted on wood (later).

The Wednesday Evening Buddha, or Phra Lae Lei, with its unique story of the Buddha receiving offerings from a monkey and an elephant, presents us with profound lessons about generosity, humility, and interconnectedness.
This story teaches that spiritual offerings are not defined by material wealth or outward appearances but by the intention behind them.
