Antique Khmer Style Bronze Mounted Temple Guardian or Lion - 29cm/12"
Measures (Height) 29cm/12"
A stunning antique Khmer style Temple Guardian or Lion figure, in the Angkor period, 10th century style of Banteay Srei.
The guardians of the gate, are placed around the outside of a temple to serve both as greeters and defenders, they were specifically intended to protect the principle entrances of temples.
The statue is cast in the round to show a strong body with an ornate coiffure with full lips and almond-shaped eyes with incised pupils beneath gently curving brows.
The Chinthe is a leogryph (lion-like creature) that is often seen at the entrances of pagodas and temples in Cambodia. It is related to the Singha in Thailand and the Simha in Sri Lanka as well as to other similar lion statues in other parts of Asia. The chinthe will serve and protect the pagoda. Like the komainu of Japan, shisa of Okinawa and snow lion of Tibet, the chinthe is a variation of the Foo Dog Guardian Lions found in China.
The casting of this piece is beautiful as you can see in the fine details of the face. Each detail is rendered perfectly. The distinctive patina of the piece is also particularly delightful.
The sculpture is mounted on wood.
This traditional in appearance piece is sure to add serenity to your home, office or sacred space.

By reflecting on the story of the Buddha, the monkey, and the monks, we are reminded of the importance of selflessness and unity in our lives.
