Antique Khmer Style Bronze Bayon Style Lokeshvara Statue - 21cm/8"
Measures (Height) 21cm/8"
An antique Khmer style Lokeshvara head in 13th century Bayon style.
Lokeshvara, also known as Avalokiteshvara, is a central figure in Mahayana Buddhism and holds a significant place in Khmer Buddhism, which has evolved through a blend of Hindu and Buddhist influences. Revered as the Bodhisattva of Compassion, Lokeshvara embodies the ideals of infinite compassion and mercy, dedicated to alleviating the suffering of all sentient beings.
Here, the face of Lokeshvara offers wide features surmounted by a cylindrical headdress adorned with an enthroned meditating Buddha and aureole. This circle of light symbolizes his divinity, boundless wisdom and enlightenment.
His softly contoured face with indigenous characteristic has a serene downcast expression, with heavy-lidded eyes, arched eyebrows carved in relief meet in the middle above a well-shaped broad nose, and wide lips with an insipid smile are framed by a second incised line.
Pendulous ears are cast ready to accept the jewellery that would have been attached during ceremonies and rituals.
The head is covered in tightly braided woven hair, enhanced by a cylindrical-shaped 'Chignon' style topknot, secured by a ribbon.
Lokeshvara's importance in Khmer Buddhism cannot be overstated. As the embodiment of compassion and mercy, he provides a spiritual and ethical model for Buddhists in Cambodia. His influence permeates religious practices, cultural expressions, and social services, making him a pivotal figure in both historical and contemporary contexts.
This traditional in appearance piece is sure to add a unique touch to any room of your home or workplace.
