An antique Thai style Thoughtful Buddha stood samabhanga on a lotus flower pedestal. The lotus flower represents purity, compassion and the giving of great joy to all.
The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow. He has a large ushnisha protuberance on top of his head, in the Sukhothai style, symbolizing his high level of spiritual development. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings.
The Buddha is stood in the Thoughtful mudra and is the Buddhist symbol for those born on a Friday. Representing an Open-Eye posture, the Buddha stands with hands crossed over his chest, in pensive thought. The right hand is placed over the left. Here, the enlightened Buddha contemplates his achievements and knowledge, standing still for 7 days under the Bodhi Tree to contemplate the suffering of all living things.
The casting is beautiful as you can see in the fine details of the face. Each detail is rendered perfectly. The distinctive patina of the piece is also particularly delightful.
