Antique Khmer Style Bronze Standing Temple Guardian or Lions (Pair) - 23cm/9"
Measures (Height) 23cm/9"
In the heart of the ancient Khmer Empire, amidst the sprawling temple complexes that echo tales of a bygone era, stand the majestic Khmer Temple Lions. These mythical creatures, with their powerful presence and intricate carvings, serve as guardians of sacred spaces and bear witness to the rich cultural heritage of Cambodia.
As with this imposing pair of antique Khmer style Temple Guardian or Lion figures, in the Angkor period, 10th century style of Banteay Srei. The 'Guardians of the gate', are placed around the outside of a temple to serve both as greeters and defenders, they were specifically intended to protect the principle entrances of temples.
These lion statues were not merely ornamental but held profound symbolic and spiritual significance.
Each statue is cast in the round to show a strength body with an ornate coiffure with full lips and almond-shaped eyes with incised pupils beneath gently curving brows.
As we stand in awe of the majestic Khmer Temple Lions, we are transported to a time when these mythical creatures stood sentinel over sacred spaces, embodying the spiritual essence of the Khmer civilization.
In their enduring gaze and intricate carvings, we find a connection to a cultural tapestry woven with reverence for the divine, artistic brilliance, and a profound sense of protection. The Khmer Temple Lions beckon us to explore the intersection of art, spirituality, and cultural legacy, inviting us to appreciate the timeless beauty that graces the temples of Cambodia.
