  • Buddha Statue - Antique Thai Style Sukhothai Seated Enlightenment Buddha Statue - 78cm/31"

    Measures - (Height) 78cm/31"

An antique Thai style Sukhothai Buddha seated, in virasana, cross-legged symbol of Serenity, with both hands in the double Bhumisparsa or 'Calling Earth to Witness' mudra. Here Buddha is sat upon a high pedestal, decorated with the head of an elephant, with downcast eyes offering peace and serenity.

The Sukhothai Kingdom, established in the 13th century, marked a significant period in Thai history. Under the reign of King Ramkhamhaeng, the kingdom flourished culturally, economically, and spiritually. The Sukhothai Buddha, serves as a poignant reminder of the artistic and religious zenith that defined this golden age.

With fingers slightly touching the ground this position represents the subduing of Mara (a demon) who bombarded Buddha with demons, monsters, violent storms and the three seductive daughters. Remaining steadfast the Buddha testified to his meritorious past by pointing to the earth and calling the Earth Goddess, Thorani.

Rising from the ground the Earth Goddess wrings the water from her long black hair. By this action she raises a torrential flood that drowns Mara and his army of demons. Reflecting this story the mudra symbolizes enlightenment, as well as steadfastness and Buddha's achievement of perfection or nirvana.

The Sukhothai Buddha holds profound symbolism within the context of Buddhist spirituality. The serene expression captures the essence of inner peace and enlightenment, inviting viewers to contemplate the teachings of the Buddha. The downcast eyes convey a sense of introspection and mindfulness, encouraging those who gaze upon it to turn inward and seek a deeper understanding of the self.

The flame-like motifs on the ushnisha are reminiscent of the Buddha's aura or "usnisa," symbolizing the radiant energy of enlightenment. This subtle yet powerful symbolism reflects the spiritual journey towards awakening and the illumination of one's inner light.

The Buddha is formed of 2 interlocking pieces, the pedestal and the Buddha statue.

The decoration of the pedestal of the Buddha includes the lotus flower.

The lotus flower represents the attaining of enlightenment and the ultimate fulfilment that follows. This symbol is heavily used in Eastern religions, which is why it can appear as both a held item or a seat. Some say that as the lotus flower grows in dirty water but becomes something beautiful, it demonstrates how we must forget our attachments to the material world around us and focus on our inner spirituality in order to seek happiness.

The lotus flower represents purity, compassion and the giving of great joy to all.

The Sukhothai Buddha remains a silent guardian of Thailand's cultural and spiritual legacy. In its serene gaze and gentle smile, one finds not just an artistic masterpiece but a timeless invitation to explore the depths of inner peace and enlightenment. As visitors and admirers from around the world engage with this profound artifact, the Sukhothai Buddha continues to weave a story of a kingdom that, in its prime, sculpted not only bronze but also the spiritual consciousness of a nation.

This traditional in appearance piece is sure to bring serenity to your home, office or sacred space.

To aid with safe transport your Buddha will be packed in a wood crate before shipping.

One of the most recognizable of the Asian deities this representation of the spiritual teacher Buddha is sure to enlighten your home with endlessly timeless style.

...very pleased with our purchase. The photograph does not do it justice.

...the Ganesha statue has arrived safe and sound. I must admit to being somewhat apprehensive about buying something on the net having being burned before with purchases from India, but I absolutely love it.
